China said yestreday it expects France to support Beijing's efforts to host a successful Olympics after President Nicolas Sarkozy linked his attendance at the Games to the situation in Tibet.
"I believe France will support our position to hold a successful Olympics and that their position will not be changed," foreign ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu told reporters.
She gave no other comment.
Sarkozy on Tuesday said the level of French participation in the August 8 Olympic opening ceremony in Beijing would depend on whether China starts a dialogue with the exiled Tibetan spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama.
"It is according to the resumption of this dialogue that I will determine the conditions of our participation," Sarkozy said, a day after the Olympic torch relay in Paris ended in fiasco after citywide pro-Tibet protests.
Sarkozy, whose country will be president of the 27-nation European Union during the Olympics, said dialogue between Beijing and the exiled Tibetan leader was required "so that the Olympic Games can take place in a calm manner."
"The Dalai Lama himself is not asking for a boycott of the Olympic Games but now it is necessary that they talk and that we avoid the Olympic flame being taken hostage by matters that are extremely worrying," Sarkozy added.
The recent Tibet crackdown and the jailing of prominent Chinese dissidents have caused outrage internationally and sparked calls for a boycott of the Olympics, or at least the opening ceremony.
China's communist rulers have been deeply angered and embarrassed over the Tibetan unrest, in what has become the biggest challenge to its rule of the remote Himalayan region in decades.
Exiled Tibetan leaders say the crackdown has killed more than 150 people. China says Tibetan "rioters" have killed 18 civilians and two policemen.
